Putting Her Armor On An acute myeloid leukemia survivor and former TV news reporter finds a new reason to help others improve their health.
WHO WE ARE

Connected and Committed

ArmorUp for Life is a women and minority-owned 501c3 advocacy and support organization that works to improve patient outcomes by giving people, especially those in underserved communities, the tools and resources they need to reduce their risk of health conditions that make it more difficult to treat cancer.

The organization was founded by Emmy Award-winning journalist Loriana Hernández Aldama in 2016 after her personal battle with AML Leukemia revealed a healthcare system filled with voids and disparities. She determined then to do everything in her power to bring about much-needed change.

How I became the story

From Emmy award-winning journalist
To 2x Cancer Survivor

In an instant, I went from living the life to fighting for my life.

In 2014, what I thought was just “overdoing it” at the gym turned out to be AML Leukemia, a blood cancer. There was no stage. It was everywhere.

To be possible, I had to do the impossible – leave my 18-month-old son and relocate to Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center for a year of  treatment. There I uncovered the biggest story of my career: The Power of PREhab

TESTIMONIALS

Our Impact

Loriana is a gifted and inspirational speaker as she connects her journey and life insights to be meaningful and actionable to every person in the audience. Her keynote at a Life Sciences conference uncovered many insights for me, as well as others. Her true, authentic self shines through and makes a room of several hundred feel like an intimate gathering of close friends. Loriana’s message is a call-to-action, and you will feel compelled to “ArmorUp”. Loriana left an indelible impression on me and I will forever carry her message forward in my heart, mind and actions.

Three years ago I found the lump that would turn out to be breast cancer. I was at one of the fittest stages of my life, very active, at a great weight, eating healthy.

I remember one of my Doctors telling me than other than the cancer, I was healthy. I found that phrase tremendously disingenuous. I felt that all my years of exercise and clean eating that started when I was a child were for nothing! However, after hearing your story, I recognize how important it was.

I was healthy, so my surgery didn’t had any complications and my recovery was great.

I kept walking during chemo, we had #arsedrag which kept me with a circle of other patients encouraging each other to exercise, and that help me to manage the chemo side effects.

I had never smoked, so my lungs didn’t had any previous damage and radiation was better tolerated.

Thank you for helping me to reframe this story.
